Welcome to My Parents Got Old™, founded by Barry and Jeff, who are brothers-in-law (Jeff is married to Barry’s sister Danna), united by the common journey of caregiving for aging parents.
Jeff’s father had a long decline, his dementia getting increasingly worse over 10 years. He went from living in his home alone with a 24/7 caregiver, to a memory care facility as he required higher level care, to a hospital rehab, to a congregate living facility (generally, the care that this institution provides is like a large residential “board and care” that is more intense than what a skilled nursing care facility offers but less intense than what a general acute care hospital renders). He sadly passed away in 2022.
Barry and Danna’s parents are in their nineties, still living at home, though there’s help in the house every day. Both mom and dad are physically pretty good, but they have been diagnosed with dementia, and each has almost no short-term memory remaining.
We’ve both weathered the challenges of caregiving. Neither of us is an expert; Barry has been a successful prime time network television writer, while Jeff has had a distinguished career in the music and magazine publishing businesses. But combined we’ve been through some pretty bad stuff, and are currently going through some not-so-great stuff. Jeff has seen the full range of serious decline, we’re both dealing with moderate decline now. So, we have experience, we’ve lived it up close, we’ve done the research, and we’ve figured out a few things.
At My Parents Got Old™, we offer a blend of personal experience, research, and hard-won insights to support you on your caregiving path. Whether you seek information, inspiration, or practical guidance, we’re here to accompany you through the complexities of caring for aging parents in their latter years.
